Perpetually bored at a school that hates fun, fourth-graders George Beard and Harold Hutchins love to make comic books and have created the ultimate superhero - Captain Underpants. But when the boys inadvertently hypnotise their mean principal Mr Krupp, their superhero comes to life! The class clowns now need to deal with their principal turning into Captain Underpants whenever anyone snaps their fingers and the crazy adventures that ensue.
Captain Underpants author Dav Pilkey created the Captain Underpants books whilst in the second-grade. Diagnosed with dyslexia and ADHD, Dav was frequently sent out of class for being disruptive and spent that time creating comics. His teacher told him he couldn’t spend the rest of his life making silly books but Dav has since proved him very wrong. The first book was published in 1997 and twelve books later the Captain Underpants series has sold over 80 million copies and been made into a film and a Netflix series (The Epic Tales of Captain Underpants, release date July 2018).
The Captain Underpants comics are great for reluctant readers and anyone with a silly sense of humour thanks to their gripping cliffhangers, hilarious pranks and awesome illustrations. Pilkey’s drawings and the flip-o-ramas that bring the cartoons to life, have inspired many readers to get drawing themselves. You’ll find lots of different websites showing you how to draw Captain Underpants, including a Captain Underpants wiki that breaks it down step by step.
There is plenty more for fans too, after the final book was released, Pilkey wrote two spin-off series featuring the Captain Underpants characters–Dog Man and Super Diaper Baby. You can even create a Captain Underpants costume for World Book Day using flesh-coloured t-shirt and trousers with a padded tummy, a homemade cape and of course some massive pants!
You can read the books in any order but start with book 1 to get the full story of how Captain Underpants came to be. The daft adventures are brilliant for independent readers, from 6 upwards and older children or adults with an appreciation for toilet humour!
